About Bogus Credit Card Offers

In today's world it is sometimes more convenient to use credit cards in place of cash or checks when purchasing goods or services. In some cases checks are not accepted and cash isn't practical. Keeping your credit in good shape is a sure way of being able to continue to use credit cards but what if you've had some rough periods and are not currently able to get a credit card? There are crooks and scam artists out there waiting to use a bogus credit card application as a way to get your personal information.

Don't fall for unrealistic promises that a company can get you a credit card no matter what the state of your credit. Fraudulent credit card offers often target people who are having or have had credit problems. Generally speaking, legitimate credit card issuers don't extend credit to people with bad credit.

Legitimate credit card issuers also don't charge ridiculously high application fees that need to be paid up front. Even when there is an annual fee that is usually charged on the first statement.

If you do have a less than average credit history then your best option may be to get a "secured" credit card until your credit is repaired. A secured credit card requires that you make a deposit equal in value to the credit limit with the card issuing bank. The bank then will use this money to cover your purchases in the event that you are unable to pay the monthly credit card bill. This is a good way to start rebuilding credit.

If you do in fact have credit problems, there are many options. Fraudulent credit card companies may also claim that they can repair your bad credit, for a large upfront fee of course. What they don't tell you is that you can correct inaccurate information on your credit file for free, and no one can remove accurate information. The best place to start when looking for credit repair advice is your local Consumer Credit Counseling Service.
